DPR Urges Polri to Probe Merchant’s Death in Pejompongan

Lawmakers said the attackers could face heavier charges, including premeditated murder, if evidence shows prior planning.

Abdullah, a member of House Commission III, urged Polri to fully investigate the death of BS, a 59-year-old mirror vendor who died during unrest in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta, after a public demonstration near the DPR building on Thursday (27/8) night. He asked police not to stop at identifying the people who carried out the violence on the ground, but also to trace who mobilized them and whether any party gave orders. Abdullah said the investigation must be thorough and transparent to avoid public speculation. According to him, if the evidence supports it, those involved in the assault could be charged under more serious criminal provisions. The victim’s wife, Sudarsi, said BS left home after the situation was considered safer, but did not return. The family only learned where BS was on Friday early morning after receiving a video, then got word that the victim had been taken to RS Polri.
