Police arrest 322 after riot at DPR protest in Jakarta
New: Of the 160 under questioning, 12-19 year olds; police also recorded one death after the unrest.
Polda Metro Jaya arrested 322 people after violence broke out following a protest near the Gedung DPR/MPR complex in Jakarta on Thursday (27/8). Polda Metro Jaya public relations chief Budi Hermanto said all were still being questioned and none had been released by Friday (28/8). Police said the unrest began after most of the crowd dispersed, then a group carried out vandalism, damaged public facilities and threw objects at officers. Of those detained, 162 people aged 18-40 were handled by Ditreskrimum, while 160 others aged 12-19 were handled by the PPA and TPPO units. Police also seized a machete, scissors, a knife sharpener, a slingshot, 19 arrowheads, an iron chain, four bamboo sticks and a pickup truck that was allegedly driven toward officers. Republika reported that police also recorded one fatality.
