Iran president pushes new US deal amid war
Teheran says talks in Oman are underway, while reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains tied to conditions and security guarantees.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian pushed for a new deal with the United States, saying now is the best time to negotiate amid the continuing conflict. At a press conference in Teheran, he said domestic unity after the war gives Iran room to pursue diplomacy and carry forward a memorandum of understanding signed in June. But Pezeshkian said Washington must restore trust and insisted Iran will adjust its commitments based on U.S. compliance. At the same time, talks in Oman are said to be seeking a way out of the “neither war nor peace” situation. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key flashpoint after JD Vance said the U.S. wants to restore oil and gas flows, while Iran has tied reopening the route to additional conditions, including security commitments for commercial ships.
