Singapore’s Wong offers condolences after Indonesia quake kills 53

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong wrote to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake off Flores island killed 53 people and injured at least 135, according to Indonesian authorities. Wong said he was saddened by the loss of life and damage and offered condolences on behalf of Singapore. Indonesian officials said about 5,000 residents fled their homes after the Aug. 15 quake, which was followed by nearly 1,000 aftershocks. Authorities declared an emergency in East Nusa Tenggara, while rescue teams worked to deliver tents, food, medicine, clean water and generators. A second quake, measured at 6.1 by The Straits Times and 6.9 by CNA, struck off northern Sumatra hours later, with no casualties reported.
