Indonesia quake kills at least 38 after M7.7 jolt off Flores

What's new: Rescuers are searching collapsed buildings as landslides block roads and about 2,000 people have evacuated.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake off Indonesia's Flores Island killed at least 38 people on Saturday, damaged homes and public buildings, and left rescuers searching for survivors in the rubble. Suharyanto, who heads Indonesia's national disaster mitigation agency, said 13 people were injured, including two seriously, and some victims remained trapped inside collapsed structures. Officials were preparing two helicopters and a plane to support rescue work. The quake also triggered strong aftershocks, including one measured at 6.1, and briefly prompted a tsunami warning that was lifted after no significant sea-level rise was detected. Landslides cut off some roads, complicating access to affected areas in East Nusa Tenggara, where residents in places such as Maumere, Sikka, Nagekeo and Ruteng fled damaged buildings and moved to higher ground.
