M7.7 quake in Nagekeo triggers tsunami alert in 8 areas
BMKG recorded tsunami waves of 0.36 meters in Labuan Bajo and 0.19 meters in Sikka, with tremors felt as far as Lombok.
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck north of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday (15/8) morning and triggered an early tsunami warning. BMKG recorded the quake at 04.58 WIB, or 05.58 Wita, at coordinates 8.33 S and 121.32 E, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
BMKG placed eight areas under tsunami alert: north Manggarai, north Ngada, north Manggarai Barat, north Ende, north Sikka, as well as Selayar, Jeneponto, and Bantaeng in South Sulawesi. Modeling showed a threat of 0.5 to 3 meters in alert areas. BMKG also recorded tsunami waves of 0.36 meters in Labuan Bajo, 0.19 meters in Sikka, and 0.17 meters in Dompu, NTB. The quake was reported to have been felt strongly as far as Lombok.
