Singapore probes firms linked to Indonesia forest fires

Singapore said it could invoke THPA, while Malaysia said it has not received an official report on any role by its companies.

Singapore is investigating companies suspected of being linked to forest and land fires in Indonesia as cross-border haze worsens in the region. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said his government is ready to use the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act, or THPA, if any company is found responsible. The law allows fines of up to 2 million Singapore dollars and civil lawsuits for economic, health or property losses. In Malaysia, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh said there has been no official report on involvement by any Malaysian company. Earlier, reports by Greenpeace Indonesia, Greenpeace Malaysia and Pantau Gambut linked one Malaysian company and four concessions tied to a Singapore-based company to hot spots, without concluding that any laws were broken.
