Malaysian MP threatens lawsuit against RI over haze
Lim Guan Eng urges a permanent ASEAN task force as 34 of 68 Malaysia air stations record unhealthy levels.
Malaysian lawmaker Lim Guan Eng urged the government in Kuala Lumpur to consider legal action against Indonesia to seek compensation for cross-border haze caused by forest and land fires. During the 2027 Budget debate in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, 15 October 2026, he said the move should be taken if Jakarta rejects the formation of a permanent ASEAN task force to combat fires. Lim proposed a task force involving Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines so personnel would remain on standby year-round. The pressure came as air quality in Malaysia worsened: 34 of 68 monitoring stations recorded unhealthy readings on Thursday morning, with Klang and Johan Setia in Selangor reaching 192. Schools in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and several states were also temporarily closed on 9 October.
