Indonesia regularly reports haze-fire response to ASEAN
Regional haze alert status has been at Level 3 since August, while Malaysia plans to raise the issue at an ASEAN foreign ministers' forum before the Manila summit.
Indonesia said it has met its obligation to provide regular reports to ASEAN on its response to forest and land fires that have triggered cross-border haze. Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir said the reports were sent through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Transboundary Haze Pollution Control and included field conditions, mitigation steps and the latest developments. He said the number of hotspots continues to fall day by day, although weather remains a constraint on firefighting operations. Since August, the regional mechanism has been at Level 3 alert status. Malaysia and Singapore were said to appreciate Indonesia's efforts, but Kuala Lumpur still called for more effective measures and plans to raise the haze issue at an ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting ahead of the 49th ASEAN Summit in Manila in November.
