BMKG extends cloud-seeding operation to Berau as Kaltim fires rise
The effort moves from IKN to Berau, which has the province's highest hotspots during peak dry season and a strong El Nino.
BMKG continued its weather modification operation in Berau Regency, Kalimantan Timur, after previously running it in Ibu Kota Nusantara. The move came after Berau recorded the highest number of hot spots in the province in the middle of the August dry-season peak. Rahmat Triyono, head of PSIMKG BMKG, said the operation was carried out at the request of the Berau regent to BNPB and BMKG. Cloud seeding is only conducted when humidity and cloud height meet technical requirements. BMKG said El Nino is very strong, with an ENSO index of 2.9, higher than during the major forest and land fires in 2015. In IKN, the operation since Aug. 22 has also aimed to address the water deficit at Waduk Sepaku Semoi and was said to have successfully triggered rain. The central government had previously strengthened OMC in Kalimantan Barat and Kalimantan Tengah, while adding air support for water bombing.
