Top U.S. general maps exit strategy from war with Iran

Dan Caine is weighing limits on airpower as munitions stocks run low and fears rise of Iranian strikes on energy infrastructure.

U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Dan Caine has begun drawing up options to take the United States out of a war with Iran, according to three sources cited by CNN. He is said to believe the conflict has reached a deciding point and is working to explain to President Donald Trump that the available military options, including ones without deploying ground forces, carry limits and risks. Caine discussed the matter with CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. He also reportedly did not align with a major strike plan in late July, which Trump later pulled back after Gulf states raised concerns about an Iranian response. Another concern is dwindling U.S. ammunition stockpiles, including Patriot and THAAD interceptors as well as Tomahawk and ATACMS missiles.
