Iran nears Oman shipping pact but keeps Hormuz shut for now

Why it matters: About a fifth of global oil and gas normally moves through the strait, and the UAE reported another ship strike.

Iran said it was close to an agreement with Oman on a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, but made clear the deal alone would not reopen the vital waterway. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said technical talks were in their final stage, while Oman described the negotiations as positive and constructive. Tehran said any reopening still depends on wider demands, including US compensation and an end to pressure on Iran. The UAE separately accused Iran of hitting a carrier linked to ADNOC with a missile; the UKMTO said a vessel caught fire after an unknown projectile strike, with no injuries or pollution reported. The strait had carried roughly one-fifth of the world's oil and gas shipments before the conflict escalated in February.
