Trump demands Iran pay compensation as waterway dispute deepens
What's new: He ordered US negotiators to press the claim in future talks and warned Washington could escalate further.
President Donald Trump demanded Monday that Iran compensate victims of attacks, conflicts and domestic repression he blamed on Tehran, adding a new condition to any future negotiations. In a social media post, Trump said he had instructed US representatives to make the demand explicit in upcoming talks. Speaking at the White House, he also warned the United States could intensify the conflict if it chose to do so. The dispute follows Iran's insistence that Washington first pay for damage from US and Israeli strikes before the strategic waterway can fully reopen. Trump also cited families of anti-government protest victims in Iran and the 2000 USS Cole bombing in Yemen, which killed 17 American sailors.
