NTT quake death toll rises to 87 as Dampek bridge repairs rush ahead
150,576 people remain displaced, 1,298 were injured and 2,969 homes were damaged as aftershocks reach 5,335.
The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Nusa Tenggara Timur rose to 87 as of Saturday (22/8) at 16.00 WIB, according to BNPB. The number of injured reached 1,298, 2,969 homes were damaged, and the displaced population climbed to 150,576 amid 5,335 aftershocks. The NTT provincial government is speeding up infrastructure recovery, including roads and the Dampek Bridge on the Reo-Dampek-Pota route in Manggarai Timur, which is targeted to be back to normal on 23 August. Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena also distributed aid to three affected points in Riung, Ngada, after electricity and communications were cut off. Separately, the Vatican conveyed Pope Leo XIV's condolences to Archbishop Ende Paulus Budi Kleden over the impact of the quake that shook Flores.
