M5.1 aftershock jolts Central Sulawesi after M6.7 quake
BMKG placed the aftershock inland, 54 km northwest of Poso, as initial damage from the main quake spread to Palu, Sigi and Parigi Moutong.
A magnitude 5.1 aftershock shook Central Sulawesi on Wednesday (17/6) at 01:29 WIB, a day after the main M6.7 quake southeast of Palu. BMKG said the aftershock's epicenter was on land at coordinates 1.14 S and 120.33 E, about 54 kilometers northwest of Poso Regency, at a depth of 5 kilometers. The quake did not pose a tsunami threat. BMKG said the shaking was part of a series of shallow tectonic aftershocks caused by activity on the Sausu Fault. A day earlier, the main quake at a depth of 10 kilometers was strongly felt in Palu and Sigi, and triggered damage to public facilities in Palu, Sigi and Parigi Moutong, including cracks in Palu III Bridge and collapsed ceilings at several locations.
