M6.7 quake rocks Palu, 9 aftershocks recorded, no tsunami

By 11:20 WIB, BMKG had logged nine aftershocks, the largest at M5.1, and urged residents away from cracked buildings.

A tectonic quake with a magnitude of 6.7 shook the Palu area of Central Sulawesi on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 10:27 WIB. BMKG said the quake had no tsunami potential. The epicenter was on land, 42 kilometers southeast of Palu, at coordinates 1.03 LS and 120.24 BT and a depth of 10 kilometers. BMKG said the quake was shallow and linked to activity along an active fault, with an oblique normal or dip-slip motion mechanism. Strong shaking was felt in Palu, Sigi, Parigi Moutong, and several surrounding areas. By 11:20 WIB, BMKG had recorded nine aftershocks, the largest with a magnitude of 5.1. The agency urged residents to stay calm, avoid cracked or damaged buildings, and check the safety of their homes before going back inside.
