Forest and land fires in 6 provinces spread to 73,425 hectares

The government is prioritizing ground and air operations, adding 17 helicopters and deploying 1,500 TNI troops.

The area burned by forest and land fires in six priority provinces reached 73,425 hectares through Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026. The National Disaster Management Agency focused response efforts in Kalimantan Barat, Kalimantan Tengah, Kalimantan Selatan, Sumatra Selatan, Riau, and Jambi through aerial patrols, water bombing, and weather modification operations. Acting head of BNPB's Center for Data, Information and Disaster Communications Berton SP Panjaitan said the focus is not only extinguishing the fires, but also preventing them from spreading further and reducing the impact of smoke. President Prabowo Subianto ordered an additional 17 water-bombing helicopters in Kalimantan and the deployment of three TNI battalions, about 1,500 troops, to fight fires at scattered hotspots.
