Kalimantan wildfire smoke drives Serian pollution to unhealthy levels

APIMS put Serian at 203, and seven other areas in Malaysia were also in the unhealthy range.

Haze from forest and land fires in Kalimantan has worsened air quality in parts of Malaysia, with Serian in Sarawak reaching an air pollution index of 203 late Friday and falling into the very unhealthy category. Data from the Air Pollutant Index Management System also put Sri Aman at 182, Kuching 172, Samarahan 171, Sarikei 168, Samalaju and Bintulu at 156 each, and Mukah at 144, all in the unhealthy category. On Sunday morning, Serian was still at 194, followed by Kuching at 183, Sri Aman at 177, and Samarahan at 175. Malaysia’s Health Ministry has urged residents to cut outdoor activity when the index exceeds 100 and to prepare health services, medicines and medical staff for the effects of the cross-border haze.
