Wildfire smoke leaves Banjarbaru air unhealthy, masks urged
Air quality in Banjarbaru is around 100 micrograms per cubic meter, and health posts are being prepared for residents with respiratory symptoms.
Smoke from forest and land fires has pushed air quality in Banjarbaru, Kalimantan Selatan, into the unhealthy category, prompting residents to wear masks when outside. Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said Banjarbaru's air pollution standard index was around 100 micrograms per cubic meter, which under WHO standards is already unhealthy. During an inspection of firefighting at a karhutla hotspot in Guntung Damar on Sunday, Hanif called for karhutla response to go hand in hand with protection of public health. Local authorities have also prepared health services at several field posts for residents affected by the smoke, especially those showing signs of acute respiratory infections, or ISPA.
