BMKG records 11,869 hotspots in Kaltim, 696 more in Kalsel

That keeps wildfire risk high ahead of the September-October heat peak; in Kalsel, burned area has reached 6,905.67 hectares.

BMKG recorded a surge in hotspots in two Kalimantan provinces as the dry season intensified. In East Kalimantan, BMKG's Balikpapan station detected 11,869 hotspots from Aug. 1-21, 2026, up from 9,793 in the same period in 2015. On Aug. 21 alone, there were 980 hotspots, with the largest concentrations in Berau at 439, followed by Kutai Timur at 178 and Kutai Kartanegara at 166. BMKG expects the peak of dry conditions caused by El Nino in Kaltim to last through September-October. In South Kalimantan, an Aug. 23 update showed 696 hotspots: 45 low-intensity, 622 medium and 29 high. The Fire Weather Index was dominated by red zones. BPBD Kalsel data through Aug. 21 showed 1,651 wildfire incidents with an estimated burned area of 6,905.67 hectares.
