Trump delays strike as Iran threatens U.S. bases

The delay reflects fears of wider war, while no agreement has emerged on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. President Donald Trump has delayed plans for a strike on Iran amid worries that the Middle East conflict could escalate. Middle East Institute analyst Ross Harrison said the move was driven by the risk of a broader war, not by any easing of tensions. He said the situation can improve only if Washington and Teheran reach a clear agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei warned that Teheran's retaliation would not be limited to the Persian Gulf. He wrote that Iran would strike all enemy bases and the point of origin of the attack. Harrison said the latest dispute was triggered by differing interpretations of a memorandum signed in June, including over control of ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
