Trump alleges California primary theft as vote count stretches on

What's next: California counties have up to 30 days to count ballots, with certified primary results due to the state by July 3.

President Donald Trump accused California Democrats of trying to “steal” the state’s gubernatorial and Los Angeles mayoral primaries, while offering no evidence for the claim. In social media posts late Wednesday, Trump attacked mail-in voting and the pace of ballot counting, and claimed the votes were under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. That office declined to comment. California Democrats rejected the allegation as baseless, and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said the state would complete a fair and accurate count. California’s tally often takes days or weeks because of its 23 million registered voters, heavy mail voting and rules allowing ballots postmarked by Election Day to arrive up to seven days later.
