California vote count stretches for weeks after June 2 primary

What's new: Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can arrive by June 9, and counties have up to 30 days to finish counting.

California is still tallying votes from its June 2 primary because state law gives election officials weeks to process a system dominated by mail ballots. Every registered voter receives a ballot by mail, and those ballots must be sorted, checked and counted after they reach county offices. Ballots postmarked by Election Day remain valid if they arrive by June 9, while voters also get time to fix signature problems and counties must review provisional ballots individually. Final county results are due to the California Secretary of State by July 3, and statewide certification is set for July 10. The slow count has kept major races, including Los Angeles contests, unresolved days after voting ended.
