Tom Steyer exits California governor race after missing runoff

What's next: Steve Hilton and Xavier Becerra will face off in November after the June 2 primary narrowed the field to two.

Tom Steyer ended his California governor campaign on Tuesday after concluding he did not have enough votes to reach the November general election. The billionaire investor and environmental activist said a week after the state’s June 2 jungle primary that he could not advance as ballot counting continued. The race is now set between former Fox News host Steve Hilton and former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. Steyer had spent more than $200 million of his own money on the campaign and ran on a progressive platform that included abolishing ICE, higher taxes on the wealthy and universal health care. In his exit message, he blamed heavy opposition spending by Chevron, PG&E and Meta.
