Pentagon weighs ground operation to seize Iran uranium
The plan would deploy thousands of troops and elite units to enter Fordo or Isfahan and secure nuclear material.
The Pentagon is reported to be weighing a large-scale ground military operation to seize Iran's stockpiles of enriched uranium from its nuclear facilities. A New York Post report cited by Antara and CNBC Indonesia said thousands of United States personnel could be deployed to take control of the sites, clear booby traps, open access to collapsed tunnels, and secure nuclear material. Locations mentioned in the discussion include Fordo, Natanz, Isfahan and the Mount Pickaxe complex. According to CNBC Indonesia, of about 440 kilograms of enriched uranium, about 200 kilograms are believed to be near Isfahan. The operation is also said to require control of an air corridor so the material could be flown out of Iran, amid a diplomatic stalemate and renewed tensions in Washington-Teheran.
