Modi targets Prambanan restoration completion before 2029

The Indonesia-India project was originally set for 2026-2036 and includes restoring more than 200 perwara temples.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is targeting completion of the conservation and restoration project at the Prambanan Temple Complex before 2029 during a visit to Sleman, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. At the same location, President Prabowo Subianto and Modi signed an agreement on the temple restoration work. Modi said he would return to Indonesia to inaugurate the complex after the restoration is finished. The Indonesia-India collaboration was previously planned as a long-term 2026-2036 program, focusing on restoring more than 200 perwara temples that remain in ruins. Technical approaches being prepared include LiDAR surveys, AI digital reconstruction, anastylosis, and digital documentation.
