Karhutla in Ketapang Weakens Orangutan, BKSDA Evacuates It

The adult male received oxygen and IV fluids, and blood, feces and hair samples were taken for follow-up tests.

One Bornean orangutan was evacuated from a community oil palm plantation in Dusun 1 Sempurna, Desa Kuala Satong, Matan Hilir Utara, Ketapang, West Kalimantan, after being found in weak condition, allegedly from exposure to smoke from karhutla. Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam Kalimantan Barat and Yayasan Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia evacuated the adult male animal on Ahad, 30 Agustus. The report reached the Wildlife Rescue Unit team at 07.27 WIB, and the team carried out a measured tranquilization at around 09.13 WIB to allow a safe examination. YIARI veterinarian provided initial treatment with oxygen and intravenous fluids, and took blood, feces and hair samples. BKSDA Kalimantan Barat head Murlan Dameria Pane said fires around habitat can restrict the movement and condition of wildlife.
