Pontianak sees 300 ARI cases a day, oxygen rooms opened
Free oxygen is now available at puskesmas, hospitals and the health office as Pontianak's ARI total since January tops 36,000.
Pontianak City Health Office has opened oxygen rooms at every health facility after acute respiratory infection (ARI) cases rose to around 300 a day amid haze. The free oxygen service is available to residents with shortness of breath at puskesmas, hospitals and the Dinkes office. Pontianak Health Office head Saptiko said the increase is tied to weather conditions and heavy smoke exposure. Compared with the normal 100 to 200 cases a day, the current figure is up about 10 percent. Since January 2026, Pontianak has recorded about 36,000 ARI cases, although the haze-related increase was seen only in August when air quality worsened. The health office has also prepared logistics to handle ARI and diarrhea and asked residents to limit outdoor activities and wear masks.
