Jimly: Wiretapping of Prabowo could amount to treason

Jimly said the motive for the wiretapping must be tested in court, while the case has already ensnared 4 suspects.

Former Constitutional Court chief Jimly Asshiddiqie said the alleged illegal wiretapping of President Prabowo Subianto could amount to treason, although that cannot be concluded without proof in court. In Jakarta on Sunday, Jimly backed National Police Chief Gen. Suyudi Ario Seto in pursuing the case to the end. He said the motive behind the wiretapping must be exposed, including any attempt to paralyze the president in carrying out the government or betray national interests. He said that beyond a possible treason charge, the illegal wiretapping could also be prosecuted under the Electronic Information and Transactions Law and the Criminal Code, carrying a minimum prison term of 10 years. Earlier, Polri named four suspects, LSP, AS, EH and SU. Three of them are being held at the Mako Brimob detention center in Depok, while SU has not been detained because of illness after a stroke.
