Indonesia quake death toll rises to 47 as Flores rescue effort widens
What's new: Landslides cut off roads, about 2,000 people are in temporary shelters and 50,000 aid packages are being sent.
Rescuers searched through collapsed buildings on Flores on Saturday after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake killed at least 47 people and injured about 50 in eastern Indonesia. The quake struck before dawn near Flores, damaging nearly 160 homes along with schools, health facilities and other public buildings, the national disaster management agency, BNPB, said. Officials said people were trapped in several structures, making them priority targets for search teams. The response has been slowed by landslides that severed roads, while power and telecommunications were disrupted in parts of the island. Aid agencies were preparing support for about 2,000 people in temporary shelters, and the government sent 50,000 relief packages weighing 275 tonnes.
