BIN chief says alleged bugging of President points to treason

Herindra called the practice illegal as investigators probe alleged LIMS access without official verification.

National Intelligence Agency head Muhammad Herindra said the alleged wiretapping of President Prabowo Subianto was an illegal act that points to treason. He made the assessment at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, Nov. 6. The case implicates four police generals, including former National Police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo, as well as Insp. Gen. Ahrie Sonta Nasution, Insp. Gen. Eko Hadi Santoso and Insp. Gen. Slamet Uliandi. According to investigator findings cited by CNN Indonesia, the practice allegedly involved entering a number of phone numbers into the Lawful Interception Management System server without verification or the applicable wiretapping procedures. Herindra said the case is serious because the alleged surveillance did not target only the president, but also state officials, political figures, businesspeople, media and community leaders.
