Wildfires force 3,524 schools in Kalimantan to shift online
Kemendikdasmen is preparing an emergency smoke protocol, education posts, and mask aid through the end of September.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is preparing an updated circular on emergency smoke-learning protocols after wildfires in Kalimantan forced 3,524 education units to switch to distance learning. BNPB and Dapodik data as of 11 August 2026 show the policy affects 571,338 students in Kalimantan Barat, Pontianak, Kubu Raya, Kayong Utara, Palangka Raya, Kotawaringin Timur, and Banjarbaru. Minister Abdul Mu’ti said the safety of school communities is the priority, but the right to learn must continue. Kemendikdasmen will also activate the Wildfire Emergency Education Post in five priority provinces, require daily reporting of learning status through Dapodik, and distribute medical masks and health kits. In Banjarbaru, distance learning runs from 24-28 August 2026.
