US, Iran trade new strikes as Hormuz fighting spreads across region

Why it matters: Oil climbed above $86 a barrel as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz fell to a three-week low.

The United States and Iran exchanged more strikes Saturday on infrastructure and military targets as fighting over the Strait of Hormuz widened across the Middle East. US Central Command said its seventh straight night of attacks hit surveillance sites, logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage and maritime capabilities. Iranian state media reported strikes on bridges in Hormozgan province, including in Bandar Khamir, and acknowledged attacks on power infrastructure. Kuwait said it intercepted Iranian missiles and drones, Iraq reported downing attack drones over Irbil, and Jordan said its air defenses shot down Iranian missiles while sirens sounded in Bahrain. Iran has effectively closed the strait to shipping since the war began on Feb. 28, adding pressure on energy markets and regional security.
