US, Iran move toward deal within days on nuclear steps, Hormuz
What's next: The draft would pair inspections and sanctions relief with reopening the Strait of Hormuz, but US officials say signing is not certain.
The United States and Iran are edging toward a memorandum of understanding that could be signed within days, according to a senior Trump administration official and public comments from leaders involved in the talks. The draft would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, begin steps to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program and impose an inspection regime, while offering Iran significant economic relief, including looser long-term sanctions and access to frozen assets if it complies. President Donald Trump said a settlement was close pending final documents, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote that a final agreed text had been reached. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a memorandum had “never been closer.”
