US-Iran deadline lapses with no deal on Hormuz or nuclear dispute

Why it matters: The impasse leaves shipping through a waterway that once carried a fifth of traded oil and gas in limbo.

A 60-day deadline for the United States and Iran to turn a June truce into a broader accord expired Monday without a deal, leaving disputes over the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions and Tehran’s nuclear program unresolved. The June memorandum had aimed to halt fighting, reopen the strait and set terms for wider talks, but both sides now accuse the other of violating it. PBS reported there was no sign of compromise on Hormuz or that detailed nuclear negotiations had begun. Fox News reported Iran reached an understanding with Oman on a commercial transit route, but said it still would require US approval. The deadlock extends uncertainty over a critical shipping lane and the war that the June deal was supposed to wind down.
