Trump pushes Monday Iran talks as Tehran denies direct negotiations

What's new: Iran said it is only talking with Oman on shipping routes, even as oil fell and confusion grew over any U.S. deal.

President Donald Trump said U.S.-Iran talks would begin Monday after he halted planned strikes, but Tehran publicly denied any direct negotiations with Washington. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Iran is only in talks with Oman and that those discussions concern a temporary navigation route in the Strait of Hormuz, not a broader reopening of the waterway. The dispute underscored how uncertain diplomacy remains after months of war and repeated threats of escalation. Before the conflict, the strait carried about a fifth of traded oil and natural gas. Oil prices fell sharply Monday as investors weighed the chance of talks against the risk of new military flare-ups.
