Singapore weighs haze charges as PSI hits 212 and Indonesia seeks help

Why it matters: Singapore's 2014 haze law allows fines of up to S$100,000 a day, capped at S$2 million, for firms tied to fires abroad.

Singapore is examining which companies may be responsible for fires in Indonesia that sent haze across the city-state, with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong saying authorities could pursue action under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act and seek joint steps with other countries. Air quality worsened as Singapore's PSI reached 212 in the west at noon on Oct. 15, after PM2.5 in the west hit 288 a day earlier, the highest since 2015. The government has been distributing N95 masks and opening air-conditioned shelters. Indonesia's Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said Jakarta would accept foreign assistance and that President Prabowo Subianto had approved discussions at the technical level.
