Singapore, Qatar move toward strategic partnership, renew LNG pact

Why it matters: Qatar supplies about 25% of Singapore’s LNG imports, and both sides also flagged shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Singapore and Qatar agreed to work toward elevating ties to a strategic partnership and renewed a cooperation pact on liquefied natural gas and low-carbon technology at a leaders-level meeting in Doha on Oct. 19. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani co-chaired the ninth High-Level Joint Committee, the first time the forum has been led by both countries’ leaders in its 20-year history. The two sides said the renewed MOU between QatarEnergy and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry will support stable LNG procurement and energy security. They also pushed for deeper cooperation in defense, AI, cybersecurity and digital resilience, while stressing that shipping routes including the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and secure.
