Singapore links rail-job training to diplomas and degrees

What's new: From November, a common curriculum will cover engineers, technicians and operations staff across LTA, SMRT and SBS Transit.

Singapore will revamp the Singapore Rail Academy from November, linking rail workers’ on-the-job training and industry certifications to formal diplomas and degrees through partnerships with five educational institutions. Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said the academy will work with the Institute of Technical Education, Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and the Singapore Institute of Technology so workers can count training toward higher qualifications instead of starting over. The overhaul also creates a consolidated curriculum with the Land Transport Authority, SMRT and SBS Transit, standardizing training and expanding it beyond engineers to technicians and operations staff as the rail network grows.
