Projectile strike sets tanker ablaze near Oman in Hormuz waterway

Why it matters: The attack threatens fragile US-Iran talks and rattled a route that handles a major share of global oil and gas trade.

A tanker caught fire early Tuesday after a projectile hit it near Limah, Oman, in the Strait of Hormuz, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said. The vessel was traveling south out of the strait toward the Gulf of Oman, and authorities reported no casualties or environmental damage. NPR reported Iranian state television said the liquefied natural gas tanker was attacked after ignoring warnings, while Axios, cited by The Business Times, said Iran fired at least two missiles at commercial ships in the strait. The latest strike comes as Washington and Tehran try to turn an interim peace deal into a broader agreement to fully reopen the waterway and address Iran's nuclear program.
