Pope Leo XIV sends condolence telegram after M7.7 NTT quake
A Vatican message said the pope urged church and civil authorities to keep aid flowing as the death toll reached 75.
Pope Leo XIV sent a telegram of condolence after the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Nusa Tenggara Timur on Saturday (15/8). The message was addressed to Archbishop of Ende Mgr. Paulus Budi Kleden, signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and later posted by KBRI Vatikan on Thursday (20/8). In the telegram, the pope said he was deeply saddened by the destruction and suffering caused by the disaster and conveyed solidarity and spiritual closeness to those affected. He also urged church leaders and civil authorities to continue delivering humanitarian aid. BNPB said the quake killed at least 75 people and injured 907 others. As of Thursday at 16.00 WIB, there had been 3.752 aftershocks, including a M5,7 tremor at 10.47 local time.
