M5.8 quake jolts Flores again; BMKG logs 3,422 aftershocks
Residents from Ruteng to Labuan Bajo rushed outdoors again, even as BMKG confirmed the latest quake posed no tsunami threat.
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake again shook Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday morning, five days after the main M7.7 quake on Aug. 15. BMKG said the 05.45 WIB quake was centered on land, 34 kilometers northeast of Ruteng, Manggarai regency, at a depth of 10 kilometers and posed no tsunami threat. The shaking was felt in West Manggarai, Nagekeo and Sikka, and was strong in Labuan Bajo, sending residents out of their homes. By 06.00 WIB, BMKG had recorded 3,422 aftershocks. NTT BMKG head Arief Tyastama said aftershocks could continue for about three to four weeks. BMKG data showed the largest aftershock at magnitude 6.2, the smallest at 1.1, with 26 quakes above magnitude 5 and 99 tremors felt by residents.
