Pneumonia cases in Pontianak rise 10-20% as haze thickens

Bhayangkara Anton Soedjarwo Pontianak Hospital recorded a rise in pneumonia cases of about 10% to 20% in the emergency department and inpatient wards as air quality in Pontianak and surrounding areas worsened due to haze from forest and land fires. Hospital chief Josep Ginting said the facility was on alert by increasing readiness of health workers, medical equipment, treatment rooms and coordination with other hospitals. Lung specialist Andreas said smoke exposure can worsen the respiratory tract and, if it continues, develop into pneumonia. He said the most vulnerable groups are children and the elderly, especially residents with allergies or a history of asthma. Residents were urged to reduce outdoor activity and wear masks if they must go outside.
