Mall blast in Kumamoto kills 3 after Japan quake
Still, many people remain trapped at AEON Mall Kumamoto as 4,600 troops and 2,000 police are deployed.
Three people were confirmed dead after an explosion shook AEON Mall Kumamoto in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on Tuesday afternoon. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Wednesday that many people were still trapped at the large shopping center in Kashima City. Rescue operations also continued in Yatsushiro City, where a Nippon Paper factory chimney collapsed and several people were reported missing. More than 20 hours after the quake, about 450 evacuation centers had been opened for around 7,700 evacuees. Japan widened its emergency response by deploying about 4,600 Self-Defense Force personnel and about 2,000 police officers. Earlier, the government confirmed a total of 13 deaths related to the quake.
