Japan quake traps dozens after 7.1 tremor hits Kyushu

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan's Kyushu island on Tuesday, collapsing part of an Aeon Mall in Kashima Town and trapping multiple people as rescue crews searched the wreckage. Local reports said 20 to 30 employees were unaccounted for at the mall, where several others were pulled out and taken to hospitals. The quake hit Kumamoto prefecture at 4:27 p.m. local time, triggering a tsunami advisory for nearby western coasts that the Japan Meteorological Agency lifted within two hours. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said roads, bridges, buildings, power lines and some fires were affected. Bullet trains and local rail service in Kyushu were suspended for inspections, and authorities found no abnormalities at nearby nuclear plants.
