Pontianak schools shift to online learning as haze thickens
Starting Aug. 24, the policy covers PAUD through SMP, while parents are urged to limit children’s outdoor activities.
The Pontianak city government will again require distance learning for PAUD/TK, SD, SMP and equivalency education starting Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, because of haze from forest and land fires in West Kalimantan. The policy will remain in force while the emergency haze alert status is in effect, and in-person classes will reopen only after air quality improves. Pontianak Mayor Edi Rusdi Kamtono said the measure is intended to protect children’s health. The arrangement is set out in a letter from the Pontianak Education and Culture Office, Number B/400.7.15/1028/DISDIKBUD/2026, dated Aug. 21, 2026. Schools are asked to continue classes on schedule, including for students with limited devices or internet access. The city government has also put Posko Segar, public health centers and hospitals on standby for residents affected by the haze.
