Iran threatens to shut Strait of Hormuz over U.S. pressure
Teheran also warns it will treat countries that join U.S. economic pressure as parties to war.
Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz and halt oil exports from the Persian Gulf if the United States continues economic pressure on Teheran. The warning was issued by Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an “economic operation” and isolation of those providing vital assistance to Iran. Rezaei also cautioned neighboring countries and others against joining the campaign. If they do, he said, Iran will view that support as an act of war and could target their interests. According to Rezaei, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the U.S. fulfills commitments under the peace memorandum signed in June. The 60-day deadline for further talks under the MoU ended on 17 August, while the next round of discussions remains unclear.
