IMO rejects Iran bid to control Hormuz as US presses for halt

Why it matters: The clash sharpens pressure on Tehran after attacks on three ships and raises risks for global oil and shipping.

The U.N. shipping agency's governing council agreed Friday that countries should reject Iran's effort to impose sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz and its move to create a body controlling vessel traffic. The London-based International Maritime Organization also urged member states not to recognize any Iranian steps that close, obstruct or otherwise interfere with transit through the waterway. The action came as senior U.S. officials pushed Iran to publicly commit to ending attacks on ships and keeping all lanes open without tolls. Three ships were attacked this week, triggering U.S. strikes on Iranian targets and deepening fears over oil supplies and maritime security.
