Hormuz traffic stalls after 2 ADNOC ships are attacked

Why it matters: Only nine vessels crossed on Aug. 13, far below the usual 130-plus a day through the key oil chokepoint.

Transit through the Strait of Hormuz nearly halted after two vessels from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company were attacked while crossing the waterway on Aug. 13, with the UAE blaming Iran. Ship-tracking data cited by Kpler showed nine vessels passed through on Aug. 13, up from five a day earlier but still far below the more than 130 ships that typically used the strait each day before the war launched by the United States and Israel on Iran in February. No visible crossings were seen early on Aug. 14. The disruption comes as Washington says it can keep a naval blockade of Iran in place indefinitely and plans fresh economic measures, raising pressure on a route that carries about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows.
