Forest fires disrupt 3,030 flights, 78 airports stay open
Since Aug. 14, about 1,700 flights have been canceled, with the heaviest disruption on routes to Pontianak, Singkawang, Palangkaraya and Pangkalan Bun.
Forest and land fires disrupted 3,030 flights in Indonesia, but the 78 affected airports through Oct. 25, 2026 remained open. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said schedules and departure times were adjusted to weather and visibility conditions rather than closing airports. At Pontianak Airport, for example, flights that previously operated during the day were shifted to night when conditions were safer.
Lukman F Laisa said that of the 78 airports affected on Oct. 18-25, 70 were under UPT/UPTD, seven were operated by Angkasa Pura and one was a private airport. Since Aug. 14, 154 routes have been disrupted and about 1,700 flights have been canceled. Routes to Pontianak, Singkawang, Palangkaraya and Pangkalan Bun were hit the hardest. Kemenhub also issued permits for 42 helicopters for forest fire response and two circulars on operational flight mitigation.
